UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS & DRIVES

Join Episcopal Church of the Ascension at the Reading Phillies
We are going to the ballgame for ‘Celebrate Your Faith’ night on Thursday, July 14, 2022.
The game begins at 7pm. We have reserved seating in section 8 facing the 3rd baseline. Two to four players will participate in a faith discussion after the game. It lasts about 20 minutes. The discussions are non-denominational and do not promote any specific beliefs. The tickets for the game are $9 each and may be purchased from the Church.  Please contact, Fr. Steve or Matt Ryan for more information and tickets.
First Energy Stadium is located at 1900 Centre Avenue, Reading, PA 19605

2022 PCCO BACKPACK COLLECTION for THE POINT
The Episcopal Church of the Ascension will be responsible for 15 backpacks (8 have been collected. We are only in need of 7 more) and school supplies for The Point.  Backpacks with side pockets for water bottles and the appropriate school supplies are due at the church by Sunday, July 31st.
Backpacks are needed for both elementary and high school students.
The following school supplies are needed for each backpack, as well:  water bottle, pack of No. 2 pencils, pack of pens, one subject notebooks, 2 ounce hand sanitizer.
Items will be collected downstairs in St. Joseph’s Hall. Please consider helping our local kids with this important outreach effort.  You may donate backpacks and/or supplies as works for you.  Or you may donate money to this worthy cause.  We are suggesting $25 donations for a backpack.  However, any donation is most appreciated and will be used toward meeting our goal.
Donations may be given by check or cash in an envelope.  Checks are to be made out to Church of the Ascension with a note in the memo for “Backpacks.”  Likewise, envelopes should be marked, “Backpacks.” Donations may be placed in the collection, given to Beth Davis, or sent to:
Church of the Ascension
PO Box 193
406 Second Avenue
Parkesburg, PA 19365

Any donation, big or small, helps the cause! Thank you!

How to Create the Beloved Community
In our Baptismal Covenant (Prayer Book page 304), we vow to "respect the dignity of every human being" and to "seek and serve Christ, loving our neighbor as ourselves." These vows are not a one-time pledge, but a daily evaluation we should do with our actions, looking to see how the ways we interact with those around us both helps to create as well as hinders the formation of the Beloved Community that Jesus sought to build here on earth.

Beloved Community will meet twice this summer with the next meeting being July 21st at 5 PM on Zoom. Please note the time change. The group will record the conversations. Those interested in listening to the discussion can request the recording.
The group is going to take some time studying gun violence in our society. There will be discussions about what we can do to improve the situation.
The following articles will inform the discussion during the July Meeting:
This is an article from Lancaster General with some statistics. The hope of the group is that there will be ongoing sharing of readings and discussion during the month.

Journal of Lancaster General Health - Journal of Lancaster General Hospital (jlgh.org)
Hopkins Bloomberg Public Health Magazine on How to End America's Gun Violence Epidemic.
